The City of Colorado Springs announced on March 16 that the west side of the Fountain Creek bridge on 8th Street will close overnight starting Wednesday, March 18, as part of ongoing bridge rehabilitation work. Traffic will remain open in both directions during this phase, with the bridge expected to reopen in its new configuration in April.
This project is significant for drivers and businesses along 8th Street, as it marks the last major traffic shift before completion. The city said work will begin at 7 p.m. Wednesday and is scheduled to finish by 5 a.m. Thursday. During construction, northbound traffic will have one lane open across the bridge while southbound traffic will have two lanes available. This phase is expected to last four weeks and includes repairs to the bridge deck and sidewalk on the west side.
Once this stage concludes, the bridge will feature two through-lanes in each direction and a third northbound lane leading to the eastbound frontage road for U.S. Highway 24. A new multi-use sidewalk on the east side of the bridge will also open at that time. Crews are set to return later in spring for final asphalt paving and striping.
South of the bridge, crews recently completed drilling under 8th Street to locate utilities and found several previously unmarked underground lines between Motor City Drive and Fountain Creek bridge. As a result, design documents and construction phases are being revised to reduce further impacts on motorists and local businesses.
Access to area businesses remains open and clearly marked throughout construction. For more information or updates about the project, residents can visit ColoradoSprings.gov/8thstreet.
