This August, the Read Across America initiative is highlighting books that encourage students to connect with their interests and values. The selection aims to make learning more meaningful by supporting students in pursuing subjects they care about.
For elementary readers, “Every Monday Mabel” by Jashar Awan tells the story of a young girl who looks forward to seeing the garbage truck each week. For middle grade students, “Kaya Morgan’s Crowning Achievement” by Jill Tew follows Kaya, a Black twelve-year-old who faces bias and exploitation while staying true to herself during a Renaissance Faire camp competition. The young adult recommendation is “Banned Together” by Ashley Hope Pérez, an anthology featuring 15 authors and illustrators that addresses the impact of books and encourages teens to advocate for reading freedom.
The Read Across America program offers additional resources for educators seeking ways to engage students in literature that reflects their identities and passions.
