Crews working for the Colorado Department of Transportation (CDOT) and Hamon Infrastructure have finished installing 3.5 miles of new concrete noise walls along Interstate 70, between Pecos Street and I-76 in Denver and Jefferson County. This marks the completion of the project’s second phase, following an earlier effort in 2022 that replaced one mile of noise barriers between Tennyson Street and Lowell Boulevard.
The second phase began in March 2024. Crews removed old timber noise walls on both sides of I-70 and replaced them with new concrete panels. The project also included upgrades to guardrails, concrete barriers, as well as regrading and landscaping improvements. Although this phase was expected to be completed by fall 2026, construction concluded nearly a year ahead of schedule.
Jessica Myklebust, Regional Transportation Director of Region 1, stated: “Delivering this project phase ahead of schedule reflects the hard work and efficiency of our teams. For the communities along this I-70 corridor, these new concrete walls mean relief from noise pollution and the confidence of a more stable safety barrier. We are proud to deliver this key improvement to residents of our region.”
Final clean-up will continue through December. CDOT noted that crews will return in spring 2026 to complete landscaping efforts but do not anticipate any significant impacts on drivers.
The newly installed concrete walls are designed to reduce traffic-related noise for residents and businesses near I-70 and improve the visual appearance along the highway. Concrete panels were selected for their durability and long-term effectiveness compared to timber structures.
