The Colorado Department of Transportation (CDOT) has announced that it will permanently close the I-25 East Frontage Road access to Weld County Road 34 in Mead on January 5 at 5 a.m. The closure is necessary for crews to extend the North Creek Box Culvert as part of the I-25 North Express Lanes project.
According to CDOT, this move is coordinated with the Town of Mead and Weld County, who are working on a two-mile section of High Plains Boulevard between Weld County Road 32 and Weld County Road 36. When completed, which is expected by summer 2026, traffic that previously used the frontage road will be redirected to High Plains Boulevard. Afterward, the frontage road will be reserved for private property and utility access only.
“Local motorists will be able to access their properties between WCR 34 and WCR 36, but thru traffic will not be allowed. Similarly, local motorists will be able to access their properties between WCR 34 and WCR 32, but no thru traffic will be allowed,” according to CDOT.
Beginning in late January, construction crews plan to narrow sections of the frontage road from Mulligan Street (in the northeast quadrant of Colorado Highway 66 and I-25) to Colorado Highway 56. This work prepares for both widening northbound lanes on I-25 and transitioning use of the frontage roadway.
During construction activities, the frontage road south of WCR 32 will also close so crews can complete widening and drainage improvements along I-25. Detour routes and speed limit changes will be posted throughout these zones.
CDOT advises drivers to stay informed about travel updates through its website at https://www.codot.gov/projects/northi25.
Construction schedules may change due to weather conditions.
