The Colorado Department of Transportation announced on April 3 that a traffic shift will take place on US Highway 50 north of Montrose starting April 14 as part of an ongoing culvert replacement project. Traffic will be redirected onto the westbound lanes in a two-way, single-lane configuration while work is carried out on the frontage road and eastbound lanes.
The change aims to keep vehicles moving in both directions during construction, which is expected to continue until June 2026. The department said the new culverts are designed to handle more rainfall, reduce flooding risks, and maintain safe driving conditions by preserving roadway integrity.
Motorists using the Frontage Road detour from Mile Post 89.7 to MP 90 will be shifted onto US 50’s westbound lanes beginning at 7 a.m. Tuesday, April 14. Access to local roads such as 6300 Road will remain open for right turns only via intersections north of the closure and near the Rexel store.
Drivers should expect daytime construction hours from Monday through Friday between 7 a.m. and 7 p.m., with possible single-lane closures, double-lane closures, shoulder closures within the work zone, reduced speeds, and short delays. Construction schedules may vary depending on weather conditions.
According to the official website, the Colorado Department of Transportation works to improve quality of life for residents through integrated transportation solutions and oversees infrastructure across Colorado. The agency builds and maintains interstates, U.S., and state highways while also supporting aviation and transit projects according to its website. Shoshana Lew serves as executive director for CDOT according to official information.
