The U.S. Census Bureau will release the 2020-2024 American Community Survey (ACS) 5-year estimates to embargo subscribers on January 27 at 10 a.m. ET, with public access following on January 29.

The ACS is a key resource for data about people and housing in the United States. It covers topics such as languages spoken at home, education levels, commuting habits, employment, mortgage status, rent, income, poverty rates, and health insurance coverage. For many of these subjects, the ACS provides the only local-level estimates available.

According to the Census Bureau, embargo subscribers will have early access to statistics for various geographic areas. These include all states, the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico, congressional and state legislative districts, metropolitan and micropolitan statistical areas, counties, places, census tracts, and block groups.

Wire services and distribution outlets are not allowed to share embargoed news stories or data before the embargo lifts. The full set of data products—including those available through data.census.gov and other Census Bureau tools—will be accessible to everyone by 10 a.m. ET on January 29.

Those interested in obtaining embargo access can register through the Census Bureau’s website at www.census.gov/newsroom/releases/archives/embargoed_releases.

“Wire and distribution services are prohibited from distributing embargoed news stories and data files before the embargo period ends. For more information, refer to the Census Bureau’s embargo policy. All data products on data.census.gov, the API, summary files, and other tools will be made publicly available by 10 a.m. ET on Jan. 29.” (U.S. Census Bureau)
