The U.S. Census Bureau will begin an embargo for the 2024 American Community Survey (ACS) 1-year estimates on September 9, 2025, at 10 a.m. Eastern Time. The data will be publicly released on September 11.

The ACS collects statistics about people and housing in the United States, including information on language spoken at home, education, commuting, employment, mortgage status and rent, income, poverty, and health insurance coverage. It is the only source of local estimates for most of its more than 40 topics.

According to the Census Bureau, “The one-year statistics will be available to embargo subscribers beginning Sept. 9 at 10 a.m. ET for all states, the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico, all congressional districts and metropolitan statistical areas, and other geographic areas with populations of 65,000 or more.”

Subscribers who register for embargo access can view these statistics from Tuesday morning until just after midnight Thursday. Wire and distribution services are not allowed to distribute any news stories or data files before the official public release date and time. The Census Bureau notes that “Wire and distribution services are prohibited from distributing embargoed news stories and data files before the public release date and time.” More details about this policy can be found on the Census Bureau’s website.

Once released to the public at https://www.census.gov/newsroom/releases/archives/embargoed_releases., all data products—including those on data.census.gov as well as through APIs and summary files—will be available by 10 a.m. ET on September 11.
