The U.S. Census Bureau has released updated Topologically Integrated Geographic Encoding and Referencing (TIGER)/Line files for 2025. These files are now available in Shapefile, Geodatabase, and GeoPackage formats, providing users with more options to create custom maps using a variety of data sources.
The latest release features new Current Suffixed Blocks Geodatabases and GeoPackages. These include both 2020 and current block information, with suffixes that identify blocks split since the 2020 census. This information can be linked to the Census Bureau’s current address count listing files.
The geospatial data offered by the Census Bureau includes legal, administrative, and statistical boundaries as well as features such as roads and bodies of water. Users will be able to connect these geographic boundary data sets to upcoming 2025 demographic data on data.census.gov, making it possible to visualize census tabular data on maps.
While TIGER/Line files do not contain demographic statistics themselves, they do provide geographic entity codes (GEOIDs) that allow users to link them with demographic data from the Census Bureau. The agency recommends consulting its TIGER Data Products Guide page for assistance in selecting the appropriate product.
