The City of Colorado Springs Parks, Recreation and Cultural Services Department (PRCS) will mark the completion of the Duck Lake restoration project in Monument Valley Park with a ribbon cutting ceremony scheduled for Thursday, October 30 at 11 a.m. The event will take place at 959 Glen Avenue, near the Heritage Garden.
The restoration involved several improvements to one of the city’s historic park spaces. Work included rebuilding the lake with a stone cap and installing a new aeration system. Crews also cleaned and restored original stonework on the levee wall, converted bluegrass turf to native vegetation supported by an updated irrigation system, added four new flower beds, and improved access to the Pikes Peak Greenway Trail from both ends of the lake.
Britt Haley, Director of Parks, Recreation and Cultural Services, stated: “The restoration of Duck Lake honors the legacy of Monument Valley Park while ensuring it remains a thriving natural and recreational space for generations to come. This project reflects the strength of community partnerships and our shared commitment to preserving Colorado Springs’ historic landscapes.”
Councilmember Nancy Henjum is expected to join Haley in delivering remarks during the ceremony. The city has invited community members to attend and view the renovated area.
Funding for this $1.5 million project came from TABOR 2B funds, support from Friends of Monument Valley Park, as well as proceeds from the Trails, Open Space and Parks (TOPS) sales tax program.
