The Colorado Department of Transportation (CDOT), in partnership with Commerce City, Adams County, and other local organizations, has officially started work on the Vasquez Boulevard Improvements Project. The groundbreaking ceremony took place at Eagle Pointe Recreation Center and included project leaders, elected officials, and community members.
Jessica Myklebust, CDOT Region 1 Regional Transportation Director, said, “This project is a great example of how collaboration leads to stronger, safer communities. Together with our local partners, we’re investing in the future of this corridor to better serve Commerce City, Adams County, and the region.”
The first phase of construction will focus on simplifying the eight-way intersection at Vasquez Boulevard and 60th Avenue. This change aims to reduce traffic congestion and improve safety for drivers. Other planned upgrades include better access for pedestrians and cyclists as well as improvements for freight movement along a route that sees more than 40,000 vehicles each day.
Commerce City City Manager Jason Rogers commented on the significance of Vasquez Boulevard since its opening in 1952: “Since 1952, Vasquez Boulevard has been more than a road, it has reflected the hard work and growth that built Commerce City. It carried workers to jobs, connected small businesses with customers, and kept goods moving across our region. Now this $10.9 million dollar investment in Vasquez will deliver safer intersections and crossings; reduced congestion with new signals, turn lanes, and widened sections; and better access for customers, workers, and deliveries.”
Commissioner Lynn Baca, Chair of the Adams County Board of Commissioners added: “This project represents the power of cross-jurisdictional partnership. By working hand in hand with the Colorado Department of Transportation, Commerce City, and our regional partners, Adams County is helping deliver long-needed safety and mobility improvements along Vasquez Boulevard. This groundbreaking is a major step forward in ensuring our transportation network keeps pace with the needs of our growing community and is, above all and as is always our top goal, safe for all who use the roadways.”
Although today marked the official start of construction activities publicly, work began in July. The contractor leading these efforts is Jalisco International. The entire project is expected to be completed by early 2027.
