The Colorado Department of Transportation announced on Mar. 31 that a resurfacing project will begin April 6 along US Highway 160 from Colorado Highway 12 to Walsenburg, with motorists advised to expect up to 15-minute delays.

The project aims to improve about 11 miles of roadway west of Walsenburg, covering Mile Point 294.4 near the intersection with CO Highway 12 through MP 305.4 near Main Street in Walsenburg. Work will include milling old asphalt, paving new asphalt, bridge deck repairs, replacing road signs, and striping.

“US 160 between CO 12 and Walsenburg is an important tourism corridor for southern Colorado, providing access to local communities and connecting travelers to Interstate 25,” said Region 2 Transportation Director Shane Ferguson. “This project is part of CDOT’s comprehensive 10-year plan and will provide a smoother, safer road surface for motorists.”

Daytime work hours are scheduled from half an hour after sunrise until half an hour before sunset Monday through Friday. Traffic impacts include single lane closures with alternating one-lane traffic in the work zone, a speed reduction, a width restriction of twelve feet for vehicles passing through the area, and potential delays up to fifteen minutes.

According to the official website, the Colorado Department of Transportation works to improve quality of life for residents by delivering integrated transportation solutions according to the official website. The department oversees transportation infrastructure across Colorado as outlined on its official site, including highways as well as support for aviation and transit sectors as per its official website. Shoshana Lew serves as executive director for CDOT according to its website.

The resurfacing project is expected to be completed by September.
