Colorado Highway 71 was closed between Rocky Ford and Ordway on Apr. 1 after a culvert failed at Mile Point 17.3 near Impassable Ditch Road, according to the Colorado Department of Transportation. The closure affects both northbound and southbound traffic, with local property owners able to access their properties from either side using a designated detour route.
The closure will remain in place until engineers can assess the damage and complete necessary repairs. There is currently no estimate for when the highway will reopen.
A detour has been established for through traffic, rerouting vehicles via US 50, CO 207, and CO 96. Local residents are permitted access up to the point of closure from either direction.
According to the official website, the Colorado Department of Transportation oversees transportation infrastructure across the state of Colorado and is responsible for building and maintaining interstates, U.S. highways, and state highways while also administering grants for aviation and transit.
