The Colorado Medical Society (CMS) is now accepting applications for the 2025 Alfred D. Gilchrist Student Leader Scholarship. The deadline to submit applications is April 1, with scholarships scheduled to be awarded in May or June of 2025.

Applicants are required to provide details about their experience in organized medicine and must upload a personal statement of up to 500 words, a letter of recommendation, and a curriculum vitae. A headshot may also be submitted but is not mandatory. The application process allows for edits after submission, and if multiple applications are received from the same individual, only the most recent will be considered final.

The Alfred D. Gilchrist Student Leader Scholarship Foundation was established in 2020 in recognition of Mr. Gilchrist’s four decades of advocacy on behalf of physicians. Mr. Gilchrist previously served as CEO of CMS. In its first year, the foundation awarded five scholarships totaling $7,000. In 2023, two recipients each received $5,000.

Eligibility for the scholarship is limited to third- and fourth-year medical students who have shown notable leadership within organized medicine. Previous recipients are not eligible to apply again. Preference will be given to students actively involved with CMS or a component medical society within Colorado.

To qualify, candidates must be full-time medical students in good standing at an accredited medical school in Colorado and have completed at least two years of study. Candidates should also demonstrate significant leadership roles within organized medicine during their time as students, with priority given to those whose contributions are linked to the Colorado Medical Society.

“Successful candidates will meet the following criteria:

Be a full-time medical student in good standing at a fully accredited medical school in the state of Colorado.
Have made significant contributions in leadership roles within organized medicine throughout candidate’s tenure as a medical student. Candidates who have made significant contributions in leadership roles connected with the Colorado Medical Society will be given a priority for selection.
Have completed a minimum of two years of medical school.
Have not received the award previously.”
