The Colorado Public Utilities Commission (PUC) is inviting the public to participate in a virtual stakeholder meeting on October 27 to discuss proposed changes to regulations for Transportation Network Companies (TNCs), commonly known as rideshares. The meeting will focus on potential rule updates, particularly those addressing concerns about imposter drivers—individuals who pose as licensed operators.
The event will take place online from 4 PM to 6 PM. During the session, PUC staff will present draft revisions of current rideshare rules and provide background information on the rulemaking process. More details about the proposed changes are available on the commission’s website at Transportation Network Companies (Rideshare) Safety Rulemaking | Public Utilities Commission.
Rebecca White, Director of the PUC, stated: “Every day, Coloradans and visitors to Colorado use rideshares as a way to get to work, travel and home. This industry has grown and evolved tremendously since the very first companies came to Colorado in 2014, and the PUC wants to ensure that our rules are keeping up. If you have used a rideshare and have ideas about how to improve vehicle, passenger and driver safety, please give us your thoughts at Rideshare Engage. If you are interested in having a voice in rules on imposter drivers, we want to hear that too whether that be through Rideshare Engage or by joining the Oct. 27 meeting.”
In addition to the upcoming meeting, the PUC operates an online platform called Rideshare Engage designed to collect public feedback on rideshare safety issues and increase awareness of its regulatory role.
The commission is responsible for ensuring that all rideshare vehicles operating in Colorado are properly licensed and insured. It also verifies that drivers pass background checks and meet medical certification standards, while confirming vehicles are safe for use. However, setting rates or fees for rideshares does not fall under its authority. Further information can be found at puc.colorado.gov/tnc.
