A firefighter from the Colorado Springs Fire Department was injured on Thursday morning after being struck by a vehicle while responding to a traffic accident on Interstate 25 near the Circle Drive exit. The incident occurred around 9:03 a.m., shortly after CSFD Engine 4 arrived at the scene to provide care for those involved in the original accident.

While firefighters were assisting patients, a separate car, not involved in the initial crash, hit one of the firefighters. The injured firefighter was transported immediately to a local hospital and is reported to be in stable condition with multiple injuries. Additional CSFD units responded to continue providing patient care for those affected by the first accident.

The Colorado Springs Police Department will release further information regarding the traffic accident, and updates can be found on the CSPD Blotter.

In response to this event, CSFD issued a reminder about safety when emergency vehicles are present. “If emergency vehicles are present, move into another lane to create a buffer zone between your car and the emergency vehicles and crews. Decrease speed when there is a stopped emergency vehicle with flashing lights. Stay alert and avoid distractions to stay aware of your surroundings. During snowstorms where the weather impacts roads, increase your following distance to give plenty of time to stop. Additionally, never assume roads are clear of ice and travel with caution.”
