On October 15, 2025, officers from the Colorado Springs Police Department responded to a call regarding a violation of a domestic violence protection order at a residence in the 7400 block of Gorgeted Quail Grove.

When police arrived, they found that the suspect had barricaded himself inside the home. The department’s Tactical Enforcement Unit and K9 personnel were called in to help manage the situation.

As officers entered the residence, K9 Roam and his handler, accompanied by members of the Tactical Enforcement Unit, confronted the suspect. During this encounter, K9 Roam was stabbed several times. He was quickly taken to an emergency veterinary facility where he remains in critical condition and is undergoing surgery.

No officers were hurt during the incident. The suspect was subdued with a chemical irritant and a taser before being taken into custody. Because of the seriousness of the attack on K9 Roam, the CSPD Homicide Unit has taken over the investigation into what they describe as an attempted killing of a police service animal.
