As National Preparedness Month is recognized, the local utility provider in Colorado Springs has released a list of recommendations aimed at helping residents improve their emergency readiness. The guidance highlights both individual and community roles in ensuring resilience during potential crises.
The utility emphasizes that while it works to maintain reliable services throughout the year, personal preparedness is equally important. Residents are encouraged to focus on hazards specific to the region, such as severe weather events—including snowstorms, wind, lightning—power outages, and wildfires.
To stay informed about emergencies, the utility advises signing up for Peak Alerts. “Knowing when something is happening is the first step in staying safe,” according to the release.
Households are urged to create emergency plans that include communication strategies and meeting points in case family members become separated. Emergency kits should be stocked with enough supplies for at least three days, including water, non-perishable food, a first-aid kit, flashlight with extra batteries, and items tailored to family needs like medications or pet food.
The release also addresses preparation for power outages by recommending flashlights over candles and having backup power sources for medical equipment if necessary. Residents should know how to operate generators safely.
Another suggestion includes learning how to shut off water lines during certain emergencies. Financial preparedness is also mentioned; families are advised to keep some cash available and review insurance coverage since ATMs may not function during outages.
Practicing emergency plans regularly can help identify gaps and ensure everyone knows what steps to take under different scenarios. Checking on neighbors—especially seniors or those with disabilities—is highlighted as an important community action during emergencies.
“Preparedness doesn’t happen overnight. Start with one or two steps this month and gradually build your readiness,” states the release. Residents are encouraged to update their plans annually and remain consistent in their efforts.
