Healthgrades bases its annual hospital awards on patient outcomes by evaluating risk-adjusted mortality and complication rates across more than 30 common conditions at about 4,500 hospitals nationwide. The goal is to help patients identify high-performing hospitals using clear measures of hospital performance.
Alana Biggers, MD, MPH, medical advisor at Healthgrades stated: “Healthgrades’ specialty awards identify the nation’s top-performing hospitals in key service areas, helping consumers find high quality care tailored to their specific needs. We’re proud to recognize CommonSpirit Health Mountain Region for its consistently superior outcomes in key service areas, including neurosciences, stroke, orthopedics, prostate care, and pneumonia.”
According to a recent analysis by Healthgrades based on MedPAR data from 2022 through 2024 covering Medicare patients only (see complete methodology here: https://www.healthgrades.com/quality/ratings-awards/methodology), if all U.S. hospitals performed similarly to five-star-rated facilities during that period an estimated 230,466 lives could have been saved while approximately 156,797 complications could have been avoided.
