CU Boulder and CU Denver announced on March 19 that they are expanding their Data Advocacy for All initiative, which aims to help students use data for more than just analysis. The expansion is supported by a CU Next Award from the University of Colorado system.
The initiative is designed to teach students how to ethically interpret, communicate, and apply data to address real-world challenges. This focus on data humanities education gives students new opportunities to learn skills that can have an impact beyond the classroom.
Students in the program use open-source tools and participate in hands-on coursework. They explore how data can reveal patterns that affect communities across Colorado. One area of study examines how climate-driven natural hazards might impact economically vulnerable communities, helping students understand the role of data in informing decisions and raising public awareness.
A video accompanying the announcement shows how CU students and faculty are using data advocacy to better understand complex issues and turn information into action.
The broader goal of the initiative is to prepare students to use data responsibly as they enter various fields, equipping them with skills needed for both ethical analysis and effective communication.
