EXMAR announced on Mar. 12 the deployment of Inmarsat’s NexusWave connectivity service across its fleet, aiming to improve communication between ship and shore teams and enhance seafarer welfare.

The initiative is significant for EXMAR as it operates globally in demanding environments where reliable connectivity is essential for business continuity and crew well-being. The company reports that NexusWave will help prevent operational delays and support crew retention by providing uninterrupted connections.

NexusWave bonds multiple network underlays, including GX Ka-band, LEO, LTE, and L-band, to ensure a consistent connection. With the service now active on part of the fleet, EXMAR has observed improved collaboration between ships and shore offices as well as more reliable access to critical applications such as video conferencing and real-time communications. Crew members also benefit from free, unlimited data during their spare time. Additionally, EXMAR expects a 20% reduction in operating expenditure by consolidating connectivity under a single provider.

Security was another key factor in the decision to upgrade. NexusWave integrates with EXMAR’s existing IT and security infrastructure, offering end-to-end encryption and data splitting across networks to protect company data. Before full deployment, both companies’ engineering teams conducted configuration testing in a ship laboratory environment and completed validation within one day.

David de Roock, IT Director at EXMAR, said: “Inmarsat’s understanding of our business needs, its round-the-clock global support offering, and its commitment to developing services in line with evolving requirements were all key factors in our decision to upgrade our fleet to NexusWave. The solution gives us the reliability, performance and security we need to operate efficiently, while also meaningfully enhancing life onboard for our crews. We are pleased to extend our longstanding relationship with Inmarsat as we prepare our vessels for the challenges and opportunities of a fast-evolving industry.”

Ab Argam, Senior Sales Manager EMEA at Inmarsat Maritime said: “EXMAR’s decision to deploy NexusWave across its growing fleet of gas carriers underscores the trust and reliability we’ve built together for more than 20 years. This is just the beginning, and I’m proud to continue our partnership to unlock future NexusWave enhancements with EXMAR that grow alongside their fleet and future ambitions.”

Viasat completed its acquisition of Inmarsat in May 2023.
