Motorists traveling in southwest Colorado should prepare for road closures and delays on US Highway 550 and Colorado Highway 145 from August 25 to August 28, according to the Colorado Department of Transportation (CDOT).

US 550 between Durango and Silverton will be closed in both directions each day from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. during this period. The closure is necessary for crews to install a new culvert under the roadway near the summit of Coal Bank Pass. Northbound traffic will be stopped just north of the Coal Bank Pass overlook at Mile Point 56.6, while southbound vehicles will be held at Andrews Lake Road at MP 63. Despite the closure, access to the Pass Creek/Engineer Mountain trailhead parking area, Coal Bank Pass overlook, and restrooms will remain open.

On CO 145, maintenance crews will conduct paving operations between Society Drive (MP 70.5) and Wagner Way (MP 69.3), south of Mountain Village. These activities are scheduled Monday through Wednesday from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., with motorists advised to expect delays ranging from 15 to 30 minutes. The work schedule may change depending on weather conditions.

The Stoner Mesa Wildfire continues to burn west of CO 145 between Rico and Dolores, resulting in a significant presence of firefighters along CO 145 and Montezuma County Road 38, about twelve miles north of Dolores. Drivers are asked to slow down and stay alert for emergency personnel and equipment operating in these areas.

“Motorists are urged to slow down and remain alert in these areas for their safety and the safety of firefighters.”
