Denver7 has announced a collaboration between Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD), the Colorado Department of Transportation (CDOT), the Colorado State Patrol, and Uber to provide a holiday Uber discount. This initiative aims to offer a safer option for individuals returning home after consuming alcohol.
According to Denver7’s report, this holiday campaign involves MADD teaming up with CDOT, the Colorado State Patrol, and Uber to provide drinkers with an easy and discounted method to get home safely. Viewers are encouraged to use a specific Uber promo code in the app to receive an $8 credit on qualifying rides. This is part of a broader effort that includes increased DUI enforcement. The coverage emphasizes that impaired-driving crashes are entirely preventable and frames the discount as an additional tool—alongside designated drivers and police patrols—to prevent families from losing loved ones during holiday celebrations.
Recent statistics from CDOT indicate that approximately one in three traffic fatalities in Colorado involves an impaired driver. During a recent November–December holiday period, more than twenty people were killed on state roads due to impaired driving. Over a single Thanksgiving DUI enforcement period, troopers and local officers arrested over 400 impaired drivers, marking nearly a 20% increase from the previous year. These figures support the argument that even modest ride credits can make a difference: every partygoer who uses an Uber voucher instead of driving represents one less potential tragedy.
Uber and MADD have established a track record of using vouchers and donations to help reduce impaired driving in Colorado and beyond. Previous campaigns in the state have offered $7–$10 ride credits on key holidays, while national partnerships have included Uber matching MADD donations up to a set amount during awareness initiatives and joining the U.S. Department of Transportation’s roadway safety “Call to Action.” In Colorado, riders have also used promo codes for discounted Uber trips on summer weekends and Independence Day, all designed to encourage rideshare use instead of risking a DUI.
