CommonSpirit Holy Cross Hospital – Jordan Valley announced on March 10 that it has received the 2026 Patient Safety Excellence Award from Healthgrades, placing it among the top 5% of hospitals nationwide. This marks the second consecutive year the hospital has earned this recognition.

The award is based on patient outcomes and reflects a comprehensive evaluation by Healthgrades, which analyzed risk-adjusted complication and mortality rates across approximately 4,500 hospitals and 13 patient safety indicators. Each indicator represents a serious but preventable complication. The analysis found significant differences in performance between hospitals with high and low safety ratings.

Christine McSweeney, president of Holy Cross Hospital – Jordan Valley, said, “This is meaningful validation of the focused effort our caregivers and physicians put forth every day to assure that we provide the highest level of safe, quality care to our patients at Holy Cross Hospital – Jordan Valley.” She added, “We have implemented national best practices, including daily safety huddles and training for all employees in the skills and practices of high-reliability organizations.”

During the study period from 2022 to 2024, there were more than 167,000 preventable safety events among Medicare patients at U.S. hospitals. Four key complications accounted for nearly 78% of these incidents. Patients treated at Holy Cross Hospital – Jordan Valley and other award-winning facilities had significantly lower risks for these complications: in-hospital falls resulting in fracture (52.4% less likely), collapsed lung due to procedures near the chest (57.5% less likely), catheter-related bloodstream infections acquired in hospital (67.8% less likely), and pressure sores or bed sores acquired in hospital (71.9% less likely).

Dr. Alana Biggers, MPH, medical advisor at Healthgrades, said, “The data behind this year’s Patient Safety Excellence Award highlights how measurable improvements in safety can prevent thousands of complications. By prioritizing evidence-based safety practices, Holy Cross Hospital – Jordan Valley is achieving better clinical outcomes and cultivating a culture where patients come first.”

Healthgrades emphasized its commitment to providing accurate information about doctors and hospitals so consumers can make informed decisions about their care.
