Holy Cross Hospital – Salt Lake has been named Utah’s only Robotic Surgery Center of Excellence by the Surgical Review Corporation (SRC), a national nonprofit focused on patient safety. The hospital, located in Salt Lake City, received the designation earlier this month.

The facility uses three types of surgical robots: da Vinci, Mako, and T-Mini. Each system is used for different procedures. Dr. Blake Johnson, a urologic surgeon at the hospital who was also recognized as a Surgeon of Excellence by SRC, said, “For many of my patients, robot-assisted surgery is an outstanding option. The robot facilitates precise dissection, as well as unparalleled visualization during surgical procedures. In many instances, the robot results in less surgical pain, decreased surgical time and improved outcomes, due to the minimally invasive nature, and advanced technology associated with the robot.”

The SRC evaluates hospitals for its center of excellence designation based on factors such as quality of care and patient safety standards, staff training levels, physician competence, experience with robotic surgery procedures, and the type of equipment available.

Bryan McKinley, president of Holy Cross Hospital – Salt Lake, stated: “This designation is a validation to our community of the excellent medical care available at Holy Cross Hospital – Salt Lake. We are committed to investing in state-of-the-art technology, and recruiting and retaining the very best physicians and team members in order to meet the needs of Salt Lake residents who come to us for their care.”

More information about robotic-assisted surgery can be found on the hospital’s FAQ page.
