The Colorado Department of Transportation (CDOT) and its contractor, Structures Inc., are set to begin rehabilitation work on four Interstate 225 bridges in Aurora starting Sunday night, August 10. The project focuses on the northbound and southbound I-225 bridges over 2nd and 6th avenues.

According to CDOT, the bridges have an elevated slope in the middle. The upcoming work aims to flatten the driving surface by applying asphalt between the bridge centers and their approaches. In addition to leveling out lanes, crews will replace bridge expansion joints with plug joints, replace several concrete panels north of 6th Avenue in both directions, install a waterproof overlay, and perform a strategic mill and overlay. The overlay will use varying depths of asphalt from the bridge center toward each approach to smooth out the roadway.

“Along with leveling out the lanes, this project includes replacing the bridge expansion joints with plug joints, replacing several concrete panels in both directions of I-225 just north of 6th Avenue, installing a waterproof overlay and doing a strategic mill and overlay. The overlay involves putting down gradually decreasing depths of asphalt from the middle of the bridge to the bridge approaches to even out the roadway surface,” stated CDOT.

The construction will require overnight lane closures for three months on I-225 between Mile Point 9.5 (just north of 6th Avenue) and Mile Point 7.5 (just south of Alameda Avenue). Work will occur Sunday through Thursday nights, closing one lane at 7 p.m., followed by two lanes at 10 p.m., with all lanes reopening by 5 a.m.

The schedule for lane closures during the week beginning August 10 is as follows:
– Northbound I-225: Sunday, August 10 and Monday, August 11
– Southbound I-225: Tuesday, August 12 and Wednesday, August 13
– Northbound I-225: Thursday, August 14

A map outlining the project area along I-225 from 6th to Alameda avenues has been made available by CDOT.
