The I-25 North Express Lanes Project, covering Mead to Berthoud, reminded drivers on April 23 of the importance of work zone safety during National Work Zone Awareness Week. The Colorado Department of Transportation said that this year’s theme, “Safe Actions Save Lives,” emphasizes everyone’s responsibility for safe travel in construction areas.
The focus on safety is significant as it aims to protect both roadway users and construction crews from preventable crashes and injuries. The department urged drivers to avoid distractions, obey posted speed limits, and remain alert while traveling through active work zones.
A new initiative supporting these efforts is the CDOT Speed Enforcement Program. Speed enforcement cameras were installed along the project corridor to address excessive speeding in vulnerable areas such as work zones. Since their implementation in early March, there has been a reduction of over 90% in excessive speeds within the work zone. Civil penalties for speeding began on April 2 after a grace period where only warnings were issued.
The Colorado Department of Transportation works to improve quality of life for residents through integrated transportation solutions according to the official website. The department also aims to deliver an effective multi-modal system that safely transports people and goods while maintaining environmental standards according to the official website. Shoshana Lew serves as executive director for the agency according to the official website.
CDOT oversees transportation infrastructure across Colorado as outlined on its official website, building and maintaining interstates, U.S. highways, state highways, and administering grants for aviation and transit according to its official site. It operates primarily in highway maintenance with additional support for aviation and transit projects as per its official website.
The I-25 North Express Lanes Project will continue activities throughout this year including bridge reconstruction, paving northbound lanes, installing intelligent transportation systems, and improving east-west connectivity with new bike lanes and sidewalks. Completion is scheduled for fall 2027.
