The Colorado Department of Transportation (CDOT) has started drainage improvement work along a one-mile section of Interstate 70 near Exit 285 toward Airport Boulevard in Adams County. The project, carried out by Myers and Sons Construction, is expected to be completed by mid-December.
The work includes cleaning existing pipes and drains, upgrading drainage structures, and installing new trench drains and a channel filtration system. These upgrades are intended to help water flow more efficiently and reduce the risk of flooding. Crews will also remove debris, protect inlets, and connect new concrete pipes to the current drainage system.
Additional improvements involve installing new guardrails, signage, striping, and barriers. According to CDOT, these changes aim to enhance driver safety by preventing hydroplaning and ice formation as well as improving visibility for drivers. The upgrades are also designed to extend the lifespan of the roadway by protecting pavement from water damage.
The I-70 off-ramp to Airport Boulevard will be closed overnight on Monday, Nov. 3, and tentatively Tuesday, Nov. 4, from 10 p.m. to 6 a.m., so crews can safely set up barriers. During this period, there will also be an eastbound right lane closure on I-70 near Mile Point 284.
Motorists traveling eastbound on I-70 who need access to Airport Boulevard are advised to take Exit 283 toward Chambers Road. Drivers should turn left onto Chambers Road, continue straight before turning left onto East 32nd Avenue, then proceed straight until reaching Airport Boulevard where they can turn right to head south or left for northbound travel.
