IAM District 6 members have increased their support for homeless veterans in Des Moines by making the annual Stand Down event an official District HELPS initiative. In 2025, IAM Locals across the district contributed funds, which were matched by District 6, resulting in a total donation of $1,150 and additional supplies. According to organizers, $750 is enough to provide 500 meals for those in need.

Thirteen members from three different IAM Locals volunteered at the event, with some traveling more than three hours to participate. The volunteers assisted with various tasks including registration, food service, security, cleanup, and water delivery. The event served over 500 people, about half of whom were veterans.

“Our veterans deserve more than gratitude, they deserve action,” said IAM Midwest Territory General Vice President Sam Cicinelli. “I’m proud of the IAM members in District 6 who stepped up to honor their service by ensuring they and their families receive the support they need.”

IAM members joined other volunteers to provide care, meals, and essential services to veterans and their families. District 6 is encouraging all IAM Districts and Locals to consider supporting Homeless Veterans Stand Down events in their own communities.
