Members of the International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers (IAM) District 776 joined together on Mar. 24 to provide food and resources to unhoused individuals in the Fort Worth area. The event, now in its third year, took place as many union members prepare for upcoming contract negotiations.
The annual District 776 Homeless Drive aims to unite union members in efforts to donate and distribute essential items to those facing hardship. This year’s initiative also received support from Taylor Rehmet, a District 776 member who now serves as a Texas State Senator.
District leaders say that while IAM is known for community service both at work and beyond, it is the local districts that sustain strong relationships with their communities during times of need. “Our retired President Paul Black shared something with me during his retirement party that I carry with me always: Never forget where you come from,” said District 776 Business Representative Eric Meriwether. “I’ve always lived by that, and it guides everything I do for our members and our community.”
After distributing food and supplies, participants gathered for a classic Texas barbecue to celebrate another successful event. Organizers expressed hope for continued success at next year’s drive.
The ongoing commitment by IAM District 776 highlights the role unions can play in supporting local communities through direct action.
