Representatives from the International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers (IAM) and the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers (IBEW) recently gathered at the William W. Winpisinger Education and Technology Center to prepare for upcoming contract negotiations with GE Appliances. The Joint Bargaining Committee (JBC), which includes members from IAM, IBEW, UA, and UE unions, represents service technicians working nationwide.
The negotiation preparation program brought together shop committee members and negotiating representatives for several days of training focused on strategy, research analysis, and coordinated bargaining across multiple unions. The goal is to ensure that all JBC unions approach negotiations in a unified manner.
During the program, participants reviewed contract language, developed proposals, conducted costing exercises, and planned communications. There was a strong focus on engaging union members so that their priorities are reflected during bargaining.
Committees from different locals worked together to identify shared challenges and exchange best practices. Key topics included protecting wages and benefits as well as improving job security and workplace protections.
“This training gives our negotiating committees the tools and confidence they need to fight for the best possible agreement,” said IAM Union Collective Bargaining Director Craig Norman. “Preparation is power, and when we walk into negotiations, we do so with a clear strategy and the full strength of our membership behind us.”
