The International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers (IAM) Union announced on March 26 the passing of Mary Allen Fones, a long-serving kitchen supervisor at the William W. Winpisinger Education and Technology Center. Fones died on March 15 at the age of 76.
Fones was a central figure at the Winpisinger Center for more than three decades, contributing to both its operations and community spirit. Her career began as one of the first three staff members hired at the center, eventually advancing from cook to kitchen leadperson before becoming kitchen supervisor in 1995. She held that role until her retirement in 2013.
Known for her humor and camaraderie with colleagues, Fones became well-loved among coworkers who considered her a lifelong friend. The IAM Union described her as someone whose laughter made even busy shifts more enjoyable. “Mary’s impact on the Winpinsinger Center is measured by all the laughs and smiles she gave our members and staff over her career,” said IAM Union International President Brian Bryant. “She touched so many of our members’ lives with her lovable personality and cooking skills. Our union is better off for her many years of dedication and we send our deepest condolences to Mary’s loved ones.”
Fones was also recognized for her culinary talents, often sharing meals with family and friends, especially enjoying appetizers like nachos. Beyond work, she was active in southern Maryland community events such as those hosted by the local Moose lodge.
Flowers or memorial contributions may be sent to Patuxent Moose Lodge in honor of Mary Fones.
