Kin has announced its expansion into Colorado, offering homeowners insurance that utilizes technology, data, and personalized service to provide affordable coverage tailored to the state’s diverse weather and geographic risks.

Colorado has experienced a significant rise in damaging weather events, increasing demand for specialized insurance solutions. According to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), the state recorded a 159% increase in billion-dollar weather disasters in recent years. Hailstorms, wildfires, freezes, and droughts have contributed to mounting losses. These disasters have made it increasingly difficult for traditional insurers to provide stable, affordable coverage, highlighting the need for innovative models like Kin’s.

The rising frequency of catastrophic weather has directly led to higher premiums for Colorado homeowners. The Rocky Mountain Insurance Information Association reports that average homeowners’ insurance premiums in Colorado increased by 59.5% between 2018 and 2023, ranking among the steepest hikes in the nation. These rising costs have strained household budgets and made the market more receptive to technology-driven entrants such as Kin that aim to offer transparent and cost-effective alternatives.

According to Insurance Journal, Kin’s expansion leverages its proprietary data and technology-first approach to meet Colorado’s insurance challenges. The company analyzes thousands of property-specific factors—ranging from location and construction materials to regional climate data—to produce accurate pricing that reflects each home’s actual risk profile. This approach allows Kin to reduce reliance on traditional agents, cut expenses, and deliver more affordable, customized coverage to residents in disaster-prone areas like Colorado’s Front Range and mountain communities.

Kin is a digital-first, direct-to-consumer home insurance provider founded in 2016 and headquartered in Chicago. According to its official site, the company operates in 13 states, including Florida, California, Texas, Louisiana, and now Colorado. It covers more than 50% of the U.S. total addressable homeowners insurance market. Kin’s mission is to simplify home insurance by using technology to deliver affordable, transparent, and personalized protection in underserved and disaster-prone markets.
