Matthew Pyne appointed as research economist at IAM Strategic Resources Department

Matthew Pyne has been named as the new Research Economist in the Strategic Resources Department of the International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers (IAM), effective February 16, 2026. The appointment was announced by IAM International President Brian Bryant.

“Matt has dedicated his career to advancing the interests of IAM members through education, research and frontline leadership,” said IAM Union International President Brian Bryant. “His deep understanding of collective bargaining, workplace safety, and labor economics, combined with his firsthand experience serving our membership, makes him exceptionally qualified for this role. Matt’s expertise will strengthen our Strategic Resources Department and support the critical work we do every day to improve the lives of working people.”

Before this appointment, Pyne worked as an Educational Representative at the William W. Winpisinger Education and Technology Center since October 2021. In that position, he provided training and leadership development to IAM members throughout North America.

Pyne became a member of IAM Local 1763 (District 140) in Halifax, Nova Scotia in 2009. He has held several positions including shop steward, national contract negotiation team member, contract researcher and presenter, and health and safety representative.

He has also played a significant role in the Young Machinists program as an organizer, presenter, mentor, and was elected President of Local 1763 for two terms. In these roles he represented members from Nova Scotia, New Brunswick, Prince Edward Island, and Newfoundland.

Additionally, Pyne served as Health and Safety Representative at Air Canada and participated on a national equipment assessments team with representatives from IAM, Air Canada, and the Government of Canada.

Pyne holds a master’s degree in labor studies from the University of Massachusetts Amherst with a focus on union leadership and administration. His academic background along with his union experience is expected to contribute to supporting IAM’s negotiations and strategic initiatives through economic research.
