Mayor Yemi Mobolade announced on April 10 the appointment of Wayne Williams as interim Chief of Staff for the City of Colorado Springs. The move brings together two former mayoral opponents in a shared effort to serve city residents and focus on results.

Williams is a longtime public servant with experience in both local and statewide government. He previously served as Colorado Secretary of State from 2015 to 2019, El Paso County Clerk and Recorder from 2012 to 2015, El Paso County Commissioner from 2003 to 2011, and most recently was an At-Large City Councilmember for Colorado Springs from 2019 to 2023, where he was elected Board Chair of Colorado Springs Utilities.

“Here in Colorado Springs, we are choosing a different story,” said Mayor Yemi Mobolade. “While national politics can feel divisive and gridlocked, we are focused on coming together to get things done. This decision is about delivering real results for our city. The issues we face around public safety, roads, housing, and economic growth aren’t partisan; they require the right people focused on execution. Wayne brings a proven track record of doing just that, and I’m confident he will help move our city forward.”

Mobolade and Williams first met as opponents in the city’s 2023 mayoral election but later collaborated on a post-campaign video message after an intense runoff election aimed at uniting the community. In recent years, Williams has contributed by serving on the Mayor’s Infrastructure Solutions Team during Mobolade’s first hundred days in office and participating in an informal Mayoral Advisory Council comprised of community leaders.

As interim Chief of Staff beginning April 20, Williams will coordinate across city departments, support strategic priorities implementation, and advise Mayor Mobolade on policy matters. “I am proud to bring my leadership and experience to this important role in the city,” said Wayne Williams. “I’m anxious to get started and serve the residents of Colorado Springs alongside Mayor Yemi.”

The appointment reflects an approach by the Mayor’s Office that prioritizes collaboration among leaders with diverse backgrounds while focusing on problem-solving for key issues facing Colorado Springs.
