Mayor Yemi Mobolade attended the State of the Neighborhoods Community Luncheon at Hillside Community Center on Sunday, an event organized by Hey Neighbor, a local non-profit focused on building strong communities in Colorado Springs. During the luncheon, Mayor Mobolade issued a proclamation designating September 28, 2025, as Good Neighbor Day in Colorado Springs.
The luncheon brought together residents, community leaders, and partners to recognize efforts that contribute to thriving neighborhoods. The event also concluded the City’s 2025 1,000 Neighborhood Gatherings campaign, which encouraged residents over the summer to host events such as block parties and park clean-ups aimed at fostering community connections.
In his address, Mayor Mobolade spoke about the importance of neighborhood relationships. “Today we celebrate a simple but powerful truth: strong neighborhoods make a strong city,” said Mayor Yemi. “Being a good neighbor means showing up for one another, lending a hand, and building connections that turn streets into communities.”
A highlight of the event was the presentation of the Spirit of Colorado Springs Award to June Waller. Waller has served Colorado Springs for more than sixty years through her work with housing initiatives and programs for seniors and youth. She also advocated for community spaces like the Leon Young Pavilion.
“June, you are a legend,” said Mayor Yemi. “Your integrity, determination, and heart have made Colorado Springs stronger. You remind us all what it means to be a good neighbor and to build true community.”
The Spirit of Colorado Springs Award is given by the mayor or an official designee to individuals who demonstrate service and leadership within the city. More information about the award is available at ColoradoSprings.gov/SpiritofColoradoSprings.
