Mercy Hospital announced on March 17 that it has been recognized as one of the nation’s Top 100 Rural and Community Hospitals for 2026 by the Chartis Center for Rural Health.

The recognition highlights Mercy Hospital’s ongoing commitment to providing high-quality healthcare services to Durango and the Four Corners region. The annual Chartis Top 100 list is considered a respected benchmark for rural healthcare performance in the United States, identifying hospitals that consistently achieve excellence among more than 2,000 rural and community hospitals nationwide.

“We are incredibly honored to be named a Top 100 Rural & Community Hospital by the Chartis Center for Rural Health for now the fifth year in a row,” said Josh Neff, president of Mercy Hospital. “This recognition is a direct reflection of the tireless dedication and exceptional work of every single member of our staff, from our compassionate nurses and skilled physicians to our diligent support teams. It underscores our commitment to providing outstanding care, right here in our community, ensuring our friends and neighbors don’t have to travel far for excellent healthcare.”

Hospitals selected for this distinction are determined by the Chartis Center’s proprietary Rural Hospital Performance INDEX. This evaluation assesses performance across eight key areas: quality, outcomes, patient perspective, cost, charge, financial efficiency, and inpatient market share. The process aims to identify rural hospitals that lead in delivering high-quality and cost-effective care.

Michael Topchik, executive director of The Chartis Center for Rural Health, said: “The delivery of care within rural communities is perhaps more complex today than at any point in recent memory. This year’s Top 100 Rural & Community Hospitals have emerged as true leaders – committed to their mission through a powerful combination of resilience, dedication and innovation. We’re delighted to recognize this year’s winners and celebrate their Top 100 status.”
