Microchip Technology has announced the launch of its LAN866x family of 10BASE-T1S endpoint devices with Remote Control Protocol (RCP), aiming to address the growing complexity in automotive network design as the industry shifts toward zonal architectures. These new endpoints are intended to streamline connectivity for a wide range of sensors and actuators within vehicles, moving away from traditional methods that require microcontrollers and custom software at each node.
The company states that the LAN866x endpoints function as bridges, translating Ethernet packets directly to local digital interfaces without requiring additional software programming at every node. This approach is designed to reduce both hardware and engineering costs, simplify system architecture, and accelerate deployment timelines. The endpoints use a 10BASE-T1S multidrop topology, which supports an all-Ethernet zonal architecture aimed at reducing cabling and integration costs.
According to Microchip, these devices are particularly suitable for critical automotive applications such as lighting systems—including interior lights and headlamps—audio systems, and various control functions. The endpoints can bridge Ethernet data directly to LED drivers for lighting or transmit audio data between microphones and speakers while also controlling sensors and actuators across the network.

Microchip’s Single Pair Ethernet (SPE) solutions portfolio includes transceivers, bridges, switches, and development tools that support multiple speed grades such as 10BASE-T1S, 100BASE-T1, and 1000BASE-T1. These products are intended for use in automotive as well as industrial and building automation sectors by enabling reliable high-speed data transmission over a single twisted pair cable while simplifying wiring requirements.
