Motorists traveling through Aurora should expect overnight closures on northbound Interstate 225 at 6th Avenue due to bridge rehabilitation work. The Colorado Department of Transportation (CDOT) and its contractor, Structures Inc., are carrying out repairs on two I-225 bridges over 6th and 2nd avenues. The closure will allow crews to apply asphalt to the bridge surfaces, improving the pavement.

The full closure of northbound I-225 at 6th Avenue is scheduled for Sunday, Oct. 26 and Monday, Oct. 27, from 9 p.m. to 5 a.m. Detour signs will be posted to help guide drivers through alternative routes during these hours. Motorists are advised to plan for delays of up to 20 minutes when using the detour starting at 9 p.m.

Local traffic will be directed off northbound I-225 onto westbound 6th Avenue, then back onto the interstate after passing through a traffic light. Commercial vehicles will be rerouted via northbound C-470 and eastbound I-70 around the closure area. Southbound I-225 will remain open throughout this period.

Later in the week, if a full closure is not required on Monday night, double lane closures are planned for southbound I-225 at both 2nd and 6th avenues. The first lane will close at 7 p.m., followed by an additional lane closing at 10 p.m., with all lanes reopening by 5 a.m.

Similarly, single and double lane closures are scheduled for northbound I-225 at these locations starting at 7 p.m., with full reopening expected by morning.

The project team reduced the initial plan of five nights of full closures down to two nights after considering several alternatives.
