Major bridge construction on the Colorado Department of Transportation’s (CDOT) I-70 Floyd Hill Project will require two overnight closures of westbound Interstate 70 near Idaho Springs in mid-December. The closures are necessary for crews to build a temporary framework that will support the construction of a concrete cast-in-place segmental bridge over live traffic.

The westbound I-70 closures are scheduled for Monday, Dec. 15, from 9 p.m. to 5 a.m. Tuesday, Dec. 16, and again on Tuesday, Dec. 16, from 9 p.m. to 5 a.m. Wednesday, Dec. 17. During these times, westbound traffic will merge into one lane and exit at the US 6 (Exit 244) off-ramp before returning to I-70 via the US 6 on-ramp. Flaggers and uniformed traffic control personnel will be present at the interchange to direct drivers.

“All work is weather-dependent and subject to change,” according to CDOT. “If weather impacts this work, crews will shift the construction schedule and closures could occur on Wednesday, Dec. 17, and Thursday, Dec. 18, from 9 p.m. to 5 a.m.”

No planned traffic impacts related to the project are expected during peak holiday travel hours between Saturday, Dec. 20 at 6 a.m., and Monday, Jan. 5, 2026 at 6 a.m.

The I-70 Floyd Hill Project aims to improve an eight-mile stretch of highway from west of Evergreen to eastern Idaho Springs by adding a third westbound Express Lane and addressing bottlenecks in the current two-lane configuration. Other improvements include constructing a missing section of frontage road between Evergreen and Idaho Springs, building an extended eastbound on-ramp for slow-moving vehicles, improving interchanges and intersections within project limits, enhancing sight distance on curves, upgrading the Clear Creek Greenway trail, and creating safer wildlife crossings.

Construction began in July 2023 with plans for I-70 to move into its new alignment by 2028; full project completion is anticipated in 2029.
