The Colorado Department of Transportation (CDOT) has begun resurfacing a six-mile stretch of US 40, starting east of Berthoud Falls and extending through Empire to Interstate 70. The work, which began in early September, includes removing old asphalt and replacing it with new pavement as part of a broader effort to improve the roadway before winter and increased ski season traffic.
The overnight paving operations are scheduled to last for six weeks, beginning Tuesday, September 2. During this period, there will be alternating single lane closures in both directions from 7 p.m. to 7 a.m., Sunday through Thursday. Motorists should also expect intermittent traffic holds lasting up to 15 minutes in each direction while work is underway at night.
Daytime activities on the project continue as well, including short-term closures for electrical upgrades, pipe installation, and guardrail replacement.
According to CDOT, “The CDOT is making significant improvements to six miles of US 40 from east of Berthoud Falls, through Empire to I-70 by resurfacing the road, installing new drainage, cleaning inlets and culverts, and replacing guardrail, signage and striping. Within the town of Empire, additional improvements include replacing two traffic signals, upgrading crosswalks and curb ramps to improve safety, constructing bulb-outs, and making drainage improvements. The upgrades will divert water away from the roadway, which will greatly help to prevent potholes, erosion and other damage. The new pavement will make for a better driving surface.”
A map detailing the resurfacing area has been provided by CDOT for public reference.
