The Colorado Department of Transportation announced on Apr. 1 that a safety improvement project will begin along Colorado Highway 12 west of Weston in mid-April, with motorists advised to expect up to 15-minute delays during construction.
The project aims to enhance road safety and driving conditions between Mile Point 46.7 and Mile Point 48 by widening the highway, reconstructing the roadway using full-depth reclamation, and adding a new eastbound passing lane. The work will also include shoulder widening, culvert repairs, new pavement markings, and updated signage.
Region 2 Transportation Director Shane Ferguson said, “The Highway of Legends is a scenic and historic route known for its views, history and outdoor experiences between Trinidad and La Veta. Construction of passing lanes will provide ample space and opportunities for vehicles to safely pass slower moving traffic.”
According to the official website, the Colorado Department of Transportation works to improve quality of life for residents through integrated transportation solutions while delivering an effective multi-modal system that safely moves people, goods, and information across the state according to the official website. Shoshana Lew serves as executive director for the department according to the official website.
During construction hours—Monday through Friday from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m.—traffic will be reduced to one alternating lane guided by traffic control personnel during daytime hours or a temporary portable signal at night and on weekends. There will be a lane width restriction of twelve feet in place throughout the work zone with speed reductions enforced.
As outlined on its official website, the department oversees transportation infrastructure statewide—including highways—and maintains interstates while supporting aviation and transit sectors as outlined on their site. The project is expected to be completed in September.
