Six hospitals in the CommonSpirit Health Mountain Region have been recognized by the Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment (CDPHE) for their efforts to improve breastfeeding support across the state. The recognition was given as part of the Colorado Hospital Lactation Collaborative, which honored 39 hospitals in total for their work in promoting and supporting breastfeeding among families.

The CDPHE’s Celebrate 6 Award of Breastfeeding Excellence acknowledges hospitals that have implemented at least six of the Baby-Friendly Hospital Initiative’s Ten Steps to Successful Breastfeeding. These steps are based on evidence showing they help increase breastfeeding rates and improve health outcomes for mothers and infants. The award is presented every two years.

Stacy Miller, Breastfeeding Specialist at CDPHE and facilitator of the Colorado Hospital Lactation Collaborative, said, “The hospitals awarded this year demonstrate their dedication to supporting Colorado families to breastfeed. With over 90 percent of Colorado families choosing to start breastfeeding their children each year, such supportive policies and practices are essential.”

The CommonSpirit Mountain Region hospitals recognized include Longmont United Hospital, St. Anthony North Hospital, St. Anthony Summit Hospital, St. Elizabeth Hospital, St. Francis Hospital, and St. Thomas More Hospital.

These initiatives align with broader state efforts to promote healthy eating and active living as a way to reduce chronic illness among residents.
