The slip exit lane from eastbound U.S. Highway 24 to southbound Peterson Road will permanently close on Monday, January 5. This closure is part of a safety improvement project in the area.
During construction, drivers who want to turn south onto Peterson Road must use the signalized intersection. Construction crews are planning to install water line casings near the electric substation in the southwest section of the corridor starting in January. Work on storm drains continues at the north end of Peterson Road and Highway 24, which may cause delays for southbound traffic. Drivers are advised to watch for signs providing updates about these changes.
Colorado Springs Utilities is working on Peterson Road south of Highway 24 by installing electrical lines and fiber optic cables. This work is expected to continue through mid-January. Temporary traffic signals remain active at both intersections of Peterson Road with Highway 24 to help manage construction-related traffic. Local signage will provide further information about ongoing changes.
The reconstruction project aims to improve safety and efficiency at the Highway 24 and Peterson Road Interchange, supporting better access control for day-to-day and emergency operations at Peterson Space Force Base North Gate. The project also anticipates increased roadway capacity due to regional growth in Pikes Peak and considers transportation options such as bus lanes, bicycle lanes, sidewalks, and trails.
Further details about the project and sign-up information for a monthly newsletter can be found at www.ColoradoSprings.gov/US24Peterson.
