There will be several overnight lane and full road closures on South Academy Boulevard in Colorado Springs during the week of August 17, 2025, as part of ongoing construction work. The eastbound right lane between Venetucci Boulevard and Interstate 25 will close on Wednesday, August 20, from 7 p.m. to 5:30 a.m. for asphalt milling. On-ramps near Pikes Peak State College parking lot B and to southbound I-25 will also be closed with detours provided.

During the same week, three sections of northbound South Academy Boulevard along the Military Access, Mobility & Safety Improvement Program (MAMSIP) corridor will experience temporary full closures for milling and pavement preparation. Closures are scheduled under I-25 on Wednesday night, between I-25 and US Highway 85/87 on Thursday night, and between US 85/87 and Bradley Road on Friday night, all from 7 p.m. to 5:30 a.m., with detours in place.

A separate overnight closure is planned for southbound South Academy Boulevard between US 85/87 and Bradley Road on Thursday, August 21, from 10 p.m. to 2 a.m., allowing crews to apply new lane striping. Traffic will be rerouted via Bradley Road, Main Street, and US 85/87 before re-entering South Academy Boulevard.

Lane shifts continue between I-25 and Fountain Creek to allow work on outside lanes; this configuration is expected until September 2025. Lanes are narrowed across the southbound bridge over US 85/87 for ongoing bridgework. Drivers are advised that merge lengths at entrance ramps have been shortened due to new alignments.

The project involves widening about one-and-a-half miles of South Academy Boulevard from two lanes to three in each direction to address recurring congestion. Additional improvements include drainage upgrades, lighting, expanded shoulders, modified merge lanes, sound walls, and bridgework. El Paso County manages the project with completion expected by early 2026.

“CDOT conducted a safety assessment for the corridor to evaluate the magnitude and nature of safety problems and analyze the causes of crashes. These transportation improvements are mitigation measures to reduce crashes, improve infrastructure, and address physical deficiencies that contribute to crashes in the corridor. Over the next 20 years, the project is estimated to result in fewer deaths, injuries and crashes on the four MAMSIP corridors.”

The Military Access, Mobility & Safety Improvement Program (MAMSIP) covers improvements along I-25, Colorado Highway 94, South Academy Boulevard, and Charter Oak Ranch Road. It aims to enhance mobility and safety while supporting economic stability in El Paso County through better connections among military installations such as Fort Carson and Peterson Space Force Base. The program receives partial funding from an $18 million BUILD grant awarded by the U.S. Department of Transportation (https://www.transportation.gov/BUILDgrants).
