Lane closures are scheduled on South Academy Boulevard in Colorado Springs from Monday, December 1 to Friday, December 5, between 7 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. The closures will occur between Venetucci Boulevard and Milton Proby Parkway for both northbound and southbound lanes. Crews will be installing signage and completing work related to roadways, traffic signal lighting, and utilities. Despite the closures, two lanes of traffic will remain open in each direction.
Drivers are advised to follow posted speed limits, maintain safe distances, and stay alert for construction crews and equipment within the work zone.
The ongoing South Academy Boulevard Widening Project is focused on expanding a 1.5-mile section of the road from two lanes to three lanes in each direction. This area stretches from the I-25 interchange across US 85/87 toward Milton E. Proby Parkway. Additional improvements include upgraded drainage systems, lighting, striping, wider shoulders, modified merge lanes, sound walls, and bridge enhancements. The project is managed by El Paso County and is expected to finish by early 2026.
According to the Colorado Department of Transportation (CDOT), a safety assessment was performed on this corridor to identify issues contributing to crashes. The current transportation upgrades are intended as mitigation measures designed to reduce accidents and improve infrastructure along four corridors covered by the Military Access, Mobility & Safety Improvement Program (MAMSIP). CDOT projects that over the next two decades these efforts will result in fewer deaths, injuries, and crashes.
“These transportation improvements are mitigation measures to reduce crashes, improve infrastructure, and address physical deficiencies that contribute to crashes in the corridor,” according to CDOT.
The broader MAMSIP initiative aims at enhancing mobility along I-25, Colorado Highway 94, South Academy Boulevard, and Charter Oak Ranch Road with support from an $18 million BUILD grant awarded by the US Department of Transportation. The program seeks not only safer travel but also improved economic stability by reinforcing key connections between major military installations such as Fort Carson and several Space Force bases in El Paso County.
