There will be alternating lane closures on South Academy Boulevard in Colorado Springs from Monday, November 10 through Friday, November 14. The closures will occur between Venetucci Boulevard and Milton Proby Parkway from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. each day, as crews work on roadway, drainage, traffic signal, and utility improvements. Two lanes of traffic in each direction will remain open during this period. Drivers are advised to follow posted speed limits, maintain safe distances, and watch for workers and equipment.

On Sunday, November 9, mobile lane closures are planned in both directions on the same stretch of South Academy Boulevard from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m., while crews conduct smoothness tests on the asphalt surface. Minor delays are expected.

The schedule for these closures depends on weather conditions and may change.

These activities are part of the South Academy Boulevard Widening Project, which covers approximately 1.5 miles from the I-25 interchange past US 85/87 to just before Milton E. Proby Parkway (connecting to Powers Boulevard/CO 21). The project aims to expand South Academy Boulevard from two lanes to three in each direction to address congestion issues. Other upgrades include improved drainage systems, lighting, road striping, expanded shoulders, modified merge lanes, sound walls, and bridgework. El Paso County is managing the project with completion expected by early 2026.

A safety assessment by the Colorado Department of Transportation (CDOT) identified several safety concerns along this corridor that contributed to crashes. The ongoing improvements aim to reduce crash rates and address infrastructure deficiencies over the next two decades.

The Military Access, Mobility & Safety Improvement Program is partially funded by an $18 million BUILD grant from the U.S. Department of Transportation. According to CDOT’s website (https://www.codot.gov/projects/militaryaccesssafetyimprovements), these efforts support safer travel along I-25, Colorado Highway 94, South Academy Boulevard, and Charter Oak Ranch Road—routes important for connecting El Paso County military installations such as Fort Carson and Peterson Space Force Base.

For more information about the project or to receive updates via text message alerts or email hotline contacts are available through CDOT’s official channels.
