Two temporary road closures are scheduled on Colorado Highway 119/Diagonal Highway as part of the ongoing Safety, Mobility and Bikeway Improvements Project. The closures will affect the medians at Jay Road and Niwot Road on separate dates in October.

The closure of the Jay Road median will begin at 9 p.m. on Monday, Oct. 13, and continue through midnight on Friday, Oct. 17. During this period, the median will be inaccessible to all modes of transportation. Construction crews will remove old concrete pavement, perform utility work, pour a new concrete sidewalk, conduct striping operations, and install a permanent traffic signal pole. Separate detours will be provided for motorists and cyclists.

The closure for the Niwot Road median has been rescheduled from its original date of Oct. 9 to Thursday, Oct. 16. It will start at 7 p.m. and last overnight until 5:30 a.m. The purpose of this closure is to allow crews to work on electrical traffic systems. Westbound travelers on Niwot Road will be detoured onto northbound CO 119/Diagonal Highway, then to Airport Road and back onto southbound CO 119. Eastbound travelers will be routed onto southbound CO 119, then to CO 52 and 79th Street before returning to Niwot Road.

According to project information, full closures are used to reduce the duration of traffic impacts and improve safety for both the public and construction crews. Local access for property owners will be maintained, and coordination with emergency responders will ensure access in work areas. Work schedules may change depending on conditions.

Traffic on the Diagonal Highway between Boulder and Longmont is projected to increase by 25% by the year 2040. This rise in traffic is expected to contribute to more congestion, delays, emissions, and potentially more crashes.

The CO 119 Safety, Mobility and Bikeway Project aims to enhance safety throughout the corridor, improve operational efficiency at intersections, reduce transit travel times, increase ridership, and expand opportunities for bicycle commuting. The project is also designed to integrate with other multimodal initiatives along the corridor to support reliable travel for all users.

“Full closures decrease the duration of traffic impacts and increase safety for the traveling public and crews. Local access will be maintained for property owners near these closures. The project will coordinate with emergency responders to coordinate access in work areas. Work schedules are subject to change and can vary based on conditions.”
