The U.S. Census Bureau has released the 2023 Business Dynamics Statistics (BDS), providing data on business activity such as job creation and destruction, establishment births and deaths, and firm startups and shutdowns. The BDS series offers annual statistics from 1978 through 2023.

According to the Census Bureau, “The data provide measures of business dynamics, such as job creation and destruction, establishment births and deaths, and firm startups and shutdowns for the economy overall and aggregated by establishment and firm characteristics. BDS is an annual time series spanning 1978 to 2023.”

The data are available on the BDS website, through the Census API, and in BDS Explorer. The explorer tool features an interactive dashboard that enables users to build tables and charts for comparing different measures of business dynamics.

To learn more about the dataset or access visualization tools, visit the official BDS page or use BDS Explorer.
