The U.S. Census Bureau has released preliminary data from the 2024 Annual Survey of School System Finances, offering an early overview of public school spending per student for pre-kindergarten through 12th grade. The data also include state-level summary statistics on revenues and expenditures for school systems during the 2024 fiscal year.

According to the Census Bureau, fiscal years are not consistent across all school systems, and the survey does not adjust the data to match a uniform fiscal year. The figures published in this first look are subject to revision before the final version is released.

The Census Bureau intends to publish finalized data for all 50 states and the District of Columbia in 2026.
