The Colorado Department of Transportation announced on April 3 that a resurfacing project along US Highway 40 through Milner will start Monday, April 6. The work will cover a stretch from the Xcel Energy Hayden station at Mile Point 112 to about five miles west of Steamboat Springs at MP 126 and is expected to finish by mid-November.

The project aims to improve safety and driving conditions for commuters traveling between Craig and Steamboat Springs. Work includes not only roadway resurfacing but also guardrail replacement, minor improvements, safety enhancements on three bridges, and slope stabilization in the Mt. Harris Canyon area known for rockfall challenges.

United Companies from Grand Junction has been contracted for this $12 million initiative. Paving operations are set to shift to nighttime hours starting mid-May, with daytime work running from 8:30 a.m. to 7 p.m., Monday through Friday. Night paving will occur from 7 p.m. to 6 a.m., aiming to reduce impacts on commuter traffic.

During construction, vehicles will be limited to single-lane alternating traffic throughout the corridor with lane closures managed by flaggers causing up to ten-minute delays. Temporary traffic signals will operate around the clock between Mile Points 115 and 116 in Mount Harris Canyon for slope stabilization activities, and speed limits in the work zone will be reduced to forty miles per hour.

According to the official website, the Colorado Department of Transportation works on integrated transportation solutions designed to improve quality of life for residents across Colorado while delivering an effective multi-modal system that prioritizes safety and environmental standards. The department oversees statewide infrastructure including interstates, U.S., and state highways as well as aviation and transit grants according to its official website. Shoshana Lew serves as executive director according to the official website.

As outlined on its official website, CDOT operates within the transportation sector focusing primarily on highway maintenance along with support services for aviation and transit systems.
